Zero Waste Oʻahu: Changemaker Series

Episode 1: Sky Kombucha - Reuse and Local Ingredients

This is the first episode in an ongoing series we are working on with Nicole Chatterson at Zero Waste Oʻahu. The series, titled “Changemakers,” focuses on local Hawaiʻi businesses and organizations that have implemented “zero waste” practices into their business models. These leaders in the community are moving us closer to waste free Hawaiʻi. It’s not easy to do and they deserve support and recognition for leading the charge.

From Zero Waste Oʻahu:

Sky Kombucha is hand crafted and locally brewed in Waimānalo. Co-Owners Shannon and Dave prioritize ingredients from Hawaiʻi for their delicious beverages, both supporting Hawaiʻi's farmers and avoiding shipping emissions. The Sky Kombucha team is serious about reuse--offering you two options to enjoy a delicious zero waste beverage.

Option 1: BYOB to one of Sky's self-service kegs. You can find them in stores like Kokua Market and in awesome co-working spaces like Hub Coworking Hawaii.

Option 2: Return your bottle. Sky Kombucha takes responsibility for the full life-cycle of their product. Enjoy a bottle of Sky Kombucha and when you’re finished simply bring it to any of their return locations. Sky will wash and reuse them locally (instead of shipping the glass all the way to California to be melted and made back into a glass bottle....). Plus, you get 50 cents back when you return your bottle. It’s a win, win, win.
